Today, environmental problems are among the most critical development problems of humanities in the world. It is also considered a problem that threatens the entire human civilization and all livelihoods. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) that was carried out by more than a thousand celebrated researchers and academicians argue, “over the past 50 years, humans have changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively than in any comparable period of time in human history, largely to meet rapidly growing demands for food, fresh water, timber, fibre, and fuel. This has resulted in a substantial and largely irreversible loss in the diversity of life on Earth” (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005:1). Studies into the natural resource situations of Ethiopia have also shown that the rate of land degradation is amongst the highest in the world whereby the status and extent of land degradation in some parts of the country has reached an irreversible stage. In fact, not only degradation and unsustainable land management practices have been documented and observed in the Ethiopian landscapes and elsewhere in the world, but also there are several efforts to mitigate these unsustainable uses of natural resources. For successful implementation of sustainable land management, however, a holistic understanding of the natural processes and their link with social-economic-technological-institutional/political arena is needed and hence a relevant training programme at graduate level is absolutely necessary. This program is, therefore, designed to address the holistic nature of resource management issues particularly in Ethiopia but related to global environmental change issues in general.
The general objectives of the graduate programme in Geography and Environmental Studies at Dilla University is to produce well-trained professional geographers and natural resource scientists who will work in wider professional areas related to environmental issues such as natural resource assessment and management, and who will assume training and research responsibilities.
