Biology Program

The Program of Biology is one of the pioneer fields of training established in 1989 E.C. It started with the core mission of producing competent Biology teachers, mainly meant for secondary high schools, with only three academic staff members (i.e. one Msc and two Bsc degree holders) by enrolling 30 undergraduate students. Since then, the Program has graduated 850 number of trainees with BEd (Bachelor of Education) and BSc in Biology. Currently, the Program has 57 academic and technical staffs, out of whom 37 (4 PhD, 21 Msc, 6 Bsc & 6 Diploma holders) are on job, whereas 20 are on study leave (13 for PhD & 7 for Msc training).

The intake capacity of the undergraduate program has been rising simultaneously with current total enrollment of 810 students in regular, extension and in-service program. The Program has four teaching and one research labs functional at the moment, besides new laboratory rooms are being under construction which will be organized to serve as both teaching and research laboratories.

As its second core mission, the staff members in the Program have also been undertaking various research activities mainly in the areas of ecology, biodiversity, nutrition, conservation, water treatment/environmental, ethno biology, etc. Research in biology covers diverse areas, which gives students broad educational opportunities in different sector such as, tannery  and textile industries, food processing industries, agricultural organization, health organization, etc. The major courses designed to be offered by the Program are categorized in to General Biology, Botanical Sciences, Zoological Sciences, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Microbiology & Parasitology, Ecological & Aquatic Sciences and other professionals and supportive courses.

These will provide the students with a strong foundation in teaching and research on biological sciences and to coordinate and lead activities of environmental conservation.  The program of Biology aims at training undergraduate students with BSc (Bachelor of Science) in Biology in the regular, summer and extension program. Since 2002 E.C (2009), the program has launched a post graduate (M.Sc) study in Botany.
