The
major objectives of the department are:

Train high school geography teachers with the view to meet the demand
for the increasing need of teachers in Ethiopian high schools.

Train geography professionals who can contribute meaningfully in
the various fields to enhence the socio economic developmental endeavours
of the country.

Embark on problem solving research on human and physical geography
areas such as urban and regional development planning, migration
and urbanization, environmental resource utilization and protection,
watershed and land resource management and related issues.

Provide training and consultancy service to governmental and non-governmental
organization.
Future
plan
-
Increased enrollment of undergraduate students on the teaching and
non-teaching stream.

Post graduate study(masters program) on geography and environmental
education.

Intensive research on human and physical geography areas that alleviate
the socio economic problems of the nation.

Development of geographic information systems training center.
-
Establishment of high standard GIS, cartography, hydrological and
soil laboratories.
