The forerunner of the today's Dilla University (DU) was established in 1996 as Dilla College of Teachers' Education and Health Sciences (DCTEHS). Dilla University is located in the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Regional State in an area widely known for its coffee production (Gedeo Zone). The university campus is situated in an ever green expanse of the country's south.

At the beginning there were only two faculty: Education and Health Sciences.

After 11 years of enjoying the reputation as a college producing quality graduates, especially in teacher education, DCTEHS was upgraded to a full-fledged university in 2007.

Currently, DU is a fully accredited government tertiary institution hosting students under its Eleven(11) Schools. The University has also plans to intensify its scope of training.

In 2009/10, the Health Science School (medical laboratory technology, health officer, nursing and environmental science, Midwifery and Anesthesia) in the undergraduate program is Launched. In the postgraduate level, chemistry, biology, Physics, Curriculem and leadership and geography are opened.

DU has a total of 319 academic staff members: among whom 15 are Assistant Professors, 145 Lecturers, 25 Assistant Lecturers, 108 Graduate Assistants, and 26 Technical Assistants.

From its inception in 1996, the University has graduated 8,076 students; 4,262 in the regular program, 2,484 and 1,330 in the summer and extension programs, respectively.

Currently the total number of students enrolled in the University is 7,781; 4,065 of them are regular students; 3,121 of them are in the Summer Kiremt Inservice Program (SKIP), and 595 of them are enrolled in the Continuing Extension Program (CEP).

DU has also launced the Institute of Indigenous Studies, the first of its kind in the country. The institute aims to conduct research on indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage, history, indigenous resource management, and preservation of endangered language. The institute is going to be operational in the coming year.
